Rights of man

I was listening to the news the other day when a political candidate was talking about the rights granted by the government of the USA. It was clear to me that this person, and there are many politicians that talk this way, does not understand the fundamentals of our form of government. I am not talking about the practices of government, but the fundamental principles on which our government was built.

Let's simply look at the document that started it all for us, the Declaration of Independence. Our Continental Congress declared the united colonies free from the oppressive government of England. They unitedly stated their right to do so and further stated the source of man's rights and the granter or governmental powers.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

Let me restate it. All men are created equal, no one can take it upon them self to declare the rights or deny them to others. God is the granter of rights. Government is established to protect the rights we already have, not to tell us what our rights are. The power of government is granted by the people governed.

When did we as a people give surrender our authority over government?
