My older kids were taught in public high school that the constitution is a "living breathing" document so it can be changed to protect us. I suspected this was a ploy to brainwash kids that the constitution could be changed (for evil purposes of course). I told my kids as far as I knew it was supposed to be etched in stone and immovable to protect our rights so they can't be taken away. Who was correct, the high school government class teacher or me????

I am sure everyone that reads this newsletter has played that game where everyone gathers in a circle. The first persons whispers something to the next, who in turn whispers it to the next until it gets back to the first person.
If your children's teachers were saying that the Constitution is a "living breathing" document in the sense that it is still in effect and the governing document of the United States they were right. They were also right when they told them it could be changed to protect us.
However, you got to remember that a lot of people have never read the Constitution. So what they understand is like the sentence that is wispered around the circle in a game.
Yes, the Constitution is a living document. It is real and vibrant. It is the law of our country. But it is also a rock foundation on which a great building is built. There are many ways discribing the foundation of our law and freedom.
There are those that would have us believe that the Constitution is a guideline set by the early government. They want to justify their disregard of the Constitution and the legal manner in which it can be changed. Vladimir Lenin is reported to have said: “A lie told often enough becomes truth.”
The truth is that the Constitution is a contract between the people, the states and the federal government. Can a contract be neglected or altered unilaterally? No, a well written contract distictly details how it can be altered.
The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land. (Article VI, Clause 2) Let me quote:
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
Any law that is not written and is subject to someone's whim is no law.
