Focusing on Constitutional Principles www.cacp.info – # 624– 6-17-06 – 143 – Donald Conkey Supreme Court Quote: In 1892 Justice Josiah Brewer, wrote: "No purpose of action against religion can be imputed to any legislation, state or national, because this is a religious people (Americans). This is historically true. From the discoverer (Columbus) of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation. <¶> The commission to Christopher Columbus stated . . . "it is hoped that by God’s assistance some of the continents and islands in the ocean will be discovered . . ." <¶> The first charter of Virginia, granted by King James I in 1606, began with ". . . in propagating of Christian Religion to such People as yet live in Darkness . . ." Justice Brewer further quotes from paragraph two of Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence. Question: Is there any hope for today’s Court to use the references Justice Brewer used in 1892 in deciding today’s divisive religious and moral issues?
